West Somerset Miniature Rifle League

2018/19 Week 1

Minehead Rifle Club and Williton Rifle Club have begun their annual shoulder-to-shoulder target shooting match, which has been running for many years. The League takes place over eighteen weeks. There are four cups up for grabs as well as the prestige of being overall winner in both the handicap and gun score competitions. The League is shot over 25 yards and 50 metres with teams shooting on each other’s ranges on a weekly basis. This year each Club is fielding an A and B team of seven each with the best four scores to count. Each Club has junior team members. Unlike many sports women and juniors take part on equal terms with men.
Round 1 saw all teams shooting on their home ranges. Minehead A beat Minehead B 375 to 369. Williton A beat Williton B 388 to 368. In the Handicap Competition where each team score is compared to their declared average Minehead B beat Minehead A and Williton A narrowly beat Williton B.
For Williton A Erica Jones scored a maximum of 100 with Graham Scott and John Grellier ably supporting her with 97 each. Eric Jones scored 97 for Williton B. Minehead shooters were not on song with only Bill Smyth and Elliott Morren scoring 95 for Minehead A and Andrew Moore and Malcolm Burt 94 each for the B team. Minehead A team will have to improve substantially on their performance if they are to challenge a rampant Williton A team. To be continued next week.
